I'm getting ready to proceed into The Brrrgh, and I don't know whether I want trap or drop. I had drop back in TTO, so I'm considering going with trap, but I don't know lol.

Drop is a better alternative to trap for many reasons, as you will find that:

Drop is very compatible with sound
    Drop can stack
Drop gives you big sos advantage, while trap gives you none
You get 3 pianos, compared to two TNTs
Trap may do more damage, but it can not one hit any cog that drop can't (unless your trap is organic, in which case the level 5 and level 7 gags are an exception)

Trap does have its moments of glory, but drop comes out overall better by a fairly wide gap

However, it is certainly fine for you to choose trap, as drop and trap do occupy the same niche.

I'm trapless so obviously I'm going to advocate for drop, but it really doesn't matter both gags are great (and really hard to train).

    Pros to trap:
    1. Organic railroad can kill a row of level 12 cogs, organic trapdoor can kill a level 7.
    2. Trap enhances lure (hopefully).
    Cons to trap:
    1. Can only carry 2 tnt
    2. Cannot double trap

    Pros to drop
    1. Drop does not need to be used with another gag to work.
    2. You can increase drop accuracy by stunning.
    3. You can carry more pianos than tnt
    Cons
    1. Very bad accuracy
    2. Not as powerful as trap (although inorganic trap pretty much has the same uses as inorganic drop).

As you can see there are more drop pros (which I did purposely because I have drop). In the end it doesn't matter do what you want :)

I prefer drop since it has more strategical possibilities. And you do not need another gag for it to work.

Drop. Simple 2 words : Barnacle Bessie.
how hard is it to even get anvil? 100 points isn't hard, I've maxxed it once, and I will definitally do it 2 more times at the most, It's not that hard, As for trap, takes longer because you don't get as many traps to USE. I had to do 7 bldgs. just to get quicksand while on drop got weight in like 5 bldgs. (but 100 > 500 and 100 > 800 is different)

    tl'dr : barnacle Bessie

    Barnacle Bae

but seriously, Dropless is more support oriented and trapless is definitely superior if you have intentions on getting far in the game (120+)

    Drop is the best option:

1: Drop SOS's never miss with drop (unless you lure), making Bessie and Franz even more reliable.

2: TNT does more damage, but you can only hold two of them opposed to three pianos.

3: Trap has to rely on another gag to work. Although drop is low accuracy, and stunning increases the accuracy, this is not necessary and you could just drop and hit the cog without wasting your lure.

4: You get to drop freaking pianos on cogs! How cool is that?

Though, if I could choose again, I would go TU less because it becomes pretty useless later on in the game, and everyone seems to have it.

Trap only works if you have lure as well or if you have a friend with lure. So to sum it up trap doesn't work without lure.

Drop is better strategically in many points in the game, is better for soloing, provides you with SOS drop accuracy bonuses, and is all around a better gag. You can carry more Drop than Trap and when maxed it really doesn't miss much.
